Online courses

Middle School

12-14 years old

The syllabus will be based largely on the English National Curriculum KS3 and the assessment will be partly modelled on the Cambridge Checkpoint exams. However it will also focus on the development of higher-level thinking skills (including analysis, evaluation, synthesis, organisation, problem solving, research skills, communication and collaboration) in the model of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program.

English

Students will study Language and Literature. This will include the close reading of a novel and a selection of poetry drawn from a wide range of cultures and time periods.

They will develop their ability to:

  • Identify literary features and comment on their effects;
  • To write formal essays;
  • To plan, paragraph and integrate quotations;
  • To make intelligent links between text and context;
  • To write with a high degree of technical accuracy.
  • Engage in an interdisciplinary research project, looking at the role of plagues and diseases in History and Literature.

They will improve their ability to perform in Checkpoint exams, and they will have experience of writing formal essays and creating multimedia presentations.

Your teacher will be Roddy. Originally from Scotland, Roddy studied English Literature at St Andrews and has been a high school Engish teacher for 12 years. He began in Edinburgh, then spent five years at a French / English bilingual IB school in Switzerland before moving to Monaco. He is an IB specialist, an examiner for English Literature and the Extended Essay, and he has experience of teaching IGCSE and the MYP.

He is passionate about literature, writing, and developing young people’s capacity to think analytically and critically and to express themselves with accuracy and eloquence.

Mathematics

Throughout the course, the overarching themes will be mathematical problem-solving and cooperative learning. We will be covering:

  • Probability and probabilistic games;
  • Properties of whole numbers;
  • Primes, factors and multiples;
  • Areas and volumes of shapes and solids;
  • Application of linear equations to worded problems.

Your teacher will be Eszter. Originally from Hungary, Eszter has moved to the UK to study Mathematics at Christ’s College, Cambridge. She then trained as a teacher and taught Mathematics in multiple schools in England.

Ester’s favourite parts of mathematics are logic, combinatorics, and problem-solving. She has been helping in setting and marking mathematical competitions in the UK and her goal is to make those type of amazing problems accessible to a wider range of students.

During the nine weeks of the course, students will self-discover, possibly re-discover topics using their natural problem-solving abilities, working either in pairs or as one small group.

The aim of the course is for students to gain a deep understanding of the above topics, as well as to improve their general numeracy and mathematical literacy. By the end of the course, the students will have gained practice and confidence in expressing their mathematical ideas accurately, giving them a good foundation for their later studies.
