English

The focus will be on Literature. The course has been designed to fulfill the requirements of IB English Literature, IB English Language and Literature, A-Level English Literature and AS Level English.

We will study poetry and drama, both as ‘seen’ and ‘unseen’ texts. Students will develop their ability to identify genre-specific literary features and express a clear, methodical analysis  within the context of a formal essay.

There will be a focus on paragraphing, quote selection, technical vocabulary, planning and comparison. Students will also engage in a research project comparing Historical and Literary responses to Medieval plagues, with Media and Literary responses to the current pandemic.

Your teacher will be Roddy. Originally from Scotland, Roddy studied English Literature at St Andrews and has been a high school Engish teacher for 12 years. He began in Edinburgh, then spent five years at a French / English bilingual IB school in Switzerland before moving to Monaco. He is an IB specialist, an examiner for English Literature and the Extended Essay, and he has experience of teaching IGCSE and the MYP.

He is passionate about literature, writing, and developing young people’s capacity to think analytically and critically and to express themselves with accuracy and eloquence.

Mathematics

This course will focus on some of the main topics underlining both the A-level and IB syllabuses:

  • Algebra, with specific attention given to polynomials;
  • Calculus, including the analysis of graphs of functions;
  • Proofs, which is a topic that has been a core part of IB and is an essential new addition to the A-level syllabus.

Your teacher will be Eszter. Originally from Hungary, Eszter has moved to the UK to study Mathematics at Christ’s College, Cambridge. She then trained as a teacher and taught Mathematics in multiple schools in England.

Ester’s favourite parts of mathematics are logic, combinatorics, and problem-solving. She has been helping in setting and marking mathematical competitions in the UK and her goal is to make those type of amazing problems accessible to a wider range of students.

The small group environment will give students the opportunity to discuss these topics in depth, in order to understand the underlying mathematical structure and step away from the practice of simply applying methods previously practised. This deeper understanding and ability to apply one’s knowledge to new and unusual questions are becoming more and more essential to success in the IB, as well as the new A-level with the introduction of the “problem-solving element” to the examination.

Problems and questions will be used from a wide range of sources, including, but not limited to past examination questions, general extension questions and the UKMT Senior Mathematical Challenge.
